Alcohol Licensing Training Courses
As an approved SQA centre we are able to provide training in all Alcohol Licensing related courses and environments.
SCPLH is the qualification a person requires if they wish to become a Premises Manager in a licensed premises.
The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 requires that anyone who authorises the service or sale of alcohol must hold this qualification if they wish to apply for a personal licence. It is also the qualification required to deliver mandatory staff training under the Licensing (Scotland) 2005 Act.

- Different types of licences
- Licensing hours
- Licensing law: children and young people
- Pricing and irresponsible promotions
- Your role as a personal licence holder
- Alcohol measures and the Weights and Measures Act 1985
- Illegal drugs – policy and prevention
- Miscellaneous law
The course is delivered face to face and is interactive and enjoyable. Our delivery style is by using practical good operational practice and real-life stories to bring each section to life.
You will be issued with a course handbook which will be expected to read prior to attending the course.
At the end of the training session, you will sit a multiple-choice exam, which will be a traditional paper exam. The PLH exam has 40 questions of which the pass mark is 28.
Your tutor may be able to tell you about your provisional result on the day. If you have passed your exam, they will then forward the result to SQA, and we will add this award to your Scottish Qualifications Certificate and issue you with a commemorative certificate for the relevant licensing qualification.

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 requires all liquor licence holders to undertake refresher training within 5 years of the issue of their licence. All personal licence holders must undertake a refresher training course and pass a refresher exam before the 5-year anniversary of the issue of their licence.
The Scottish government stipulates all people who hold a personal licence must successfully complete the SCPLH refresher course every 5 years of the licence issue date to remain valid.
The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 requires all liquor licence holders to undertake refresher training prior to the 5-year anniversary date of the issue of their licence. They must also submit evidence that the training has been passed to the relevant licensing board within 3 months of the 5-year anniversary.
As a licence holder, you must also renew your personal licence every 10 years, submitting the application to do so no later than 3 months before the expiry date. A valid application will require a recent Scottish Award for Personal Licence Holders Refresher certificate to be accepted.
